Stargazy Pie: The Strange British Fish Pie That Went Viral in China

Stargazy Pie went viral on Chinese social media. It comes from a British fishing village legend and features a unique fish head.

Stargazy Pie recently went viral on Chinese social media platforms such as Douyin and Xiaohongshu. Stargazy Pie has a striking and unusual appearance that immediately captures attention. Fish heads push through the pastry crust and point upwards. As a result, users share photos, recreate the dish, and discuss it widely online. Therefore, it quickly becomes a trending food topic internationally.

However, Stargazy Pie is not a modern gimmick or “dark cuisine”. Instead, it comes from a long-standing British tradition. The dish originates from Mousehole, a small fishing village in Cornwall, in the 16th century. People in this village have depended on fishing for generations. However, winter storms often prevent boats from going out to sea. Because of this, villagers sometimes face food shortages.

According to legend, a severe storm struck the village at Christmas time. The bad weather lasted for several days. As a result, food supplies ran out. At that critical moment, a fisherman named Tom Bawcock bravely sailed into the storm alone. He risked his life and went out to sea. In the end, he returned with a large catch of fish. Therefore, he saved the entire village from starvation.

To honour him, villagers created Stargazy Pie. They placed fish heads through the pastry crust. Then they angled the eyes upwards, as if the fish were looking at the stars. This design symbolised the idea of “stargazing”. In addition, the pie expresses hope for fine weather and a successful fishing season in the future.

From a culinary perspective, the design also serves a practical purpose. During baking, the juices and oils from the fish flow back into the pie. As a result, the filling becomes richer and more flavourful.

For many years, Stargazy Pie remained relatively unknown. However, it has recently gained popularity on Chinese social media. First, its unusual visual style creates a strong shock effect. The fish heads emerging from the crust surprise many viewers. Therefore, it naturally sparks curiosity and discussion.

In addition, users add humour and creative interpretations. Some say it looks “frightening yet romantic”. Others call it “the most poetic dark dish”.

Meanwhile, food creators quickly joined the trend. Some followed traditional British recipes. Others adapted the dish to suit local tastes. As a result, tutorials, taste tests, and reaction videos spread across platforms.

In conclusion, Stargazy Pie combines a powerful legend with a striking visual identity. Therefore, it moves beyond its small village origins. It becomes a viral cultural symbol that connects history, storytelling, and online humour.
