Nearly 100,000 Attend Hong Kong Year of the Horse Raceday

Hong Kong’s Year of the Horse Raceday drew nearly 100,000 visitors during the Lunar New Year, including more than 20,000 tourists from mainland China and overseas.

Hong Kong celebrated the Year of the Horse with a special raceday on February 19th, the third day of the Lunar New Year. The event took place at Sha Tin Racecourse and attracted nearly 100,000 visitors. More than 20,000 attendees came from mainland China and overseas, setting a record for the annual celebration.

Horse racing is one of Hong Kong’s most popular sports. Many residents attend races regularly. “It feels even more lively than previous years,” said a Hong Kong resident who came with his family.

For long-time racing fans, the Year of the Horse carried special meaning. A veteran racegoer in his seventies arrived dressed in bright orange and a beret. As soon as he entered the public area, he opened his race guide and studied the large screen to plan his bets. “Since it’s the Year of the Horse, we had to come for good luck,” he said.

The racecourse featured festive New Year decorations throughout the venue. Large installations themed around galloping horses became popular photo spots. Families and couples lined up to take pictures.

Tourists also joined the celebration. A visitor from Beijing said Hong Kong’s Lunar New Year events are different. “There are horse races and fireworks. It’s not the same as temple fairs in Beijing,” she said. She added that the raceday allowed her to experience a unique blend of Chinese and Western traditions. On her next visit, she plans to attend night racing at Happy Valley Racecourse.

Local singer and actor Aaron Kwok attended the event as a Horse Year ambassador and horse owner. Speaking to the media, he said watching races always inspires him. “In life, I try to train hard and give my best, just like these racehorses,” he said.

The event was organised by the Hong Kong Jockey Club. A total of 11 races were held that day.
