World’s First Zero-Carbon Airport Terminal Completed in Ordos

China has completed the world’s first zero-carbon airport terminal in Ordos, using renewable energy, smart systems and low-carbon technologies to cut emissions.

China has completed the world’s first zero-carbon airport in Ordos, a city in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, reported by CNS.

The technological achievement has been evaluated by the China Communications and Transportation Association. The innovations have been applied at Ordos Ejin Horo International Airport.

According to official information, the airport now operates its terminal building with 100 per cent zero-carbon energy, reducing carbon emissions by more than 10,000 tons per year. The project provides a systematic energy solution for airports and has become a pilot example of low-carbon transformation in China’s transport sector.

Airport buildings face long-standing challenges. They rely on fossil fuels for heating, use fluorinated refrigerants that harm the ozone layer, and show reduced efficiency in cold conditions. To tackle these issues, the Peking University IEA Ordos Energy Research Institute researched the energy supply system.

As a result, the team developed three technological innovations. Operational data show that the project has reduced overall energy consumption by 60 per cent. Direct carbon emissions dropped by 95.15 per cent. Green electricity now accounts for 88.6 per cent of total power use. Renewable energy supplies 93.8 per cent of overall demand.

Over its full life cycle, the project is expected to cut total costs by more than 25 per cent and reduce energy expenses by 43 per cent. Cross-season energy storage efficiency exceeds 70 per cent.

In addition, the airport uses an AI-based system to optimise energy allocation. This system also helps reduce aircraft taxiing time and vehicle travel distances on the ground.
