Say Hello to Harbin’s iconic 19-Meter Snowman

Discover Harbin’s iconic 19-meter snowman, a winter marvel with a red hat and scarf.

Harbin welcomes winter with its iconic snowman, now taller and more charming than ever. Standing 19 meters high, wearing a red hat, a cosy red scarf, and a heart-shaped button smile, this giant snowman greets visitors with a friendly, playful presence.

This year, the snowman returns bigger than before. It took 64 sculptors and over 100 workers 11 days to build, using more than 3,500 cubic meters of snow—the largest amount in its history. Unlike a traditional snowman, this massive structure relies on specially made artificial snow. This snow is whiter, stickier, and easier to shape than natural snow, ensuring both beauty and durability.

Even the water is special. The artificial snow is made from water drawn from the nearby Songhua River. A newly added filtration pool removes impurities, making the snow purer and slowing melting. As a result, visitors can enjoy the snowman longer, whether they watch it online or take photos on site.

More than a winter attraction, the snowman has become a cultural symbol connecting the city and its visitors. Its return highlights Harbin’s winter tourism and showcases the vibrancy of the local ice-and-snow economy. Visitors continue to flock to see the giant snowman, which some say looks “plumper” this year. Its enduring charm and playful design make it a must-see winter landmark in Harbin, delighting both locals and tourists alike.
