How Zootopia 2 Turned China Into Its Largest Global Market

Zootopia 2 has become Disney’s biggest hit in China, driven by strong box office results, fan demand, branded merchandise, and new experiences at Shanghai Disneyland.

Nine years after the original Zootopia charmed global audiences, Zootopia 2 is once again driving excitement in China’s cinemas and consumer market. The Disney sequel opened to impressive numbers. As of November 30th, the film earned $274 million( £220 million) in its first week in China’s mainland, surpassing its North American box office and becoming the film’s largest market worldwide.

While its Douban rating is slightly lower than the original’s 9.3, the sequel still holds a strong 8.5, showing solid audience support. After watching the film, many viewers praised its fast pace, detailed animation, and the chemistry between Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde. “The new characters are fun, the action is intense, and every animal feels true to life,” said Mr Wan, a moviegoer in Beijing. “I’m already looking forward to the next one.”

Merchandise Boom and Brand Collaborations

The excitement hasn’t stayed inside the theatres. Judy and Nick have become two of China’s most in-demand IP characters once again. Over 60 brands, including Luckin Coffee, Miniso, Pop Mart, and SAIC Volkswagen, released Zootopia 2-themed merchandise. These collaborations sparked a wave of fan-driven spending both online and offline.

For many, shopping is an integral part of the celebration. “Buying the merchandise feels like marking a milestone. We’ve waited nine years for this sequel,” said Ivy, who travelled specifically for the film’s limited-edition items. She purchased a themed bracelet, gloves, a headpiece, and a scarf. “It was crowded, but it was worth it. I hope more high-quality collaborations appear—I’ll definitely buy them.”

Immersive Experiences at Shanghai Disneyland

Meanwhile, Shanghai Disneyland—the world’s first park with a full Zootopia-themed land—is enhancing the sequel’s momentum. The park has updated more than 200 details inside its popular attraction Zootopia: Hot Pursuit. Visitors can now spot new clues in Judy’s office, a hidden key at Nick’s desk, and story elements connected to the new film. These additions allow fans to step deeper into the world of Zootopia and experience the atmosphere of the sequel in real life.

So far, Zootopia 2 has been in Chinese theatres for six days, with total box office earnings reaching RMB 1.95 billion ( £240 million). According to market forecasts, the film’s China box office may reach RMB 3.82 billion (£460 million), reinforcing its position as one of the most anticipated animated releases of the year.
