UK Scientist Wins 2025 Shaw Prize in Astronomy

UK Astrophysicist George Efstathiou Wins 2025 Shaw Prize for Groundbreaking Work in Cosmology.

The Shaw Prize Foundation announced the winners of the 2025 Shaw Prize at a press conference in Hong Kong on Monday. Four scientists received awards in Astronomy, Life Science &Medicine, and Mathematical Sciences.

Canadian physicist John Richard Bond and British astrophysicist George Efstathiou won the Astronomy Prize. They were honored for their pioneering work in cosmology, especially their studies on fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background radiation.

German scientist Wolfgang Baumeister received the Life Science and Medicine Prize. The award recognized his groundbreaking development and application of cryo-electron tomography, a powerful imaging technique for biological structures.

Japanese mathematician Kenji Fukaya won the Mathematical Sciences Prize for his contributions to symplectic geometry. He is currently based at the Yanqi Lake Beijing Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Applications and the Yau Mathematical Sciences Center at Tsinghua University.

Yang Guang-Kai, Chairman of the Shaw Prize Council, reaffirmed the award’s commitment to honoring scientific breakthroughs regardless of race, nationality, gender, or religion. He also revealed that the foundation is considering a new prize category in a broader scientific field. Details will be announced later.

The Shaw Prize includes three annual awards: Astronomy, Life Science&Medicine, and Mathematical Sciences. Each prize carries a cash award of USD 1.2 million. This is the 22nd edition of the prize. The award ceremony will take place in Hong Kong on October 21.
