Some drivers must wait 8 years in Beijing to get new-energy car plate

Some applicants may wait until 2027 to buy a new energy vehicle in Beijing, as 417,307 potential owners are waiting in line to receive a license plate under the quota system.

By April 8, more than 3.2 million individual purchasers had applied for gasoline-powered car plates, making the odds of winning a plate in the lottery-style system 1 in 2,462. The number of organizations applying for gasoline-powered car plates and new energy vehicle plates reached 54,962 and 7,556 respectively.

The annual quota of 54,000 new energy vehicle plates in Beijing has already been filled, meaning the remaining applicants could wait for eight years to be issued an owner’s license.

Beijing introduced a license plate lottery system in 2011 to curb growth in the number of new cars on the road. Under the system, potential car buyers participate in a lottery draw every two months to receive a purchase permit.
